The Classic-Rock-Concerts.com web site displays low-resolution versions of some copyrighted images. Accompanying every such image is a brief explanation as to how the specific reproduction constitutes "fair use" under United States copyright law. Interpretation of "fair use" rights is a complex subject and a full discussion is beyond the scope of this page. However, some things can be said about the use of copyrighted images on this web site in general:
1. Classic-Rock-Concerts.com is a reference tool. Its goal is to compile a history by collecting the knowledge ("facts") and experiences of people who were present at the events (concerts) documented. Users of this web site contribute by writing "comments" and submitting corrections and additions. As with any reference tool, the citation of authoritative documents helps to establish facts and make the reference tool more valuable. Thus, images on this site are used bibliographically. They serve to enrich the general public by contributing to a more credible historical record.
2. Images on this site are reproduced at the smallest size which does not obscure their essential contribution to the historic record. The maximum resolution is 480 by 600 pixels which is not nearly large enough to facilitate forgery of an original document (unless very small, in which case please refer to the image's "detail" page). The commercial value and marketability of the copyright holder's work should not be compromised by the use of the image on this site. In fact, it may enhance salability and awareness by increasing exposure. For more information along these lines please refer to the Computer & Communications Industry Association's (CCIA) study, published in 2007, which finds that fair use reproductions of copyrighted materials in recent years has contributed $4.5 trillion revenue annually, or one sixth of the US gross domestic product (GDP).
3. The way in which copyrighted images are used on this site is transformative as opposed to derivative. The intent is not to supercede or provide a substitute for the originals. Classic-Rock-Concerts.com does not constitute a derivative work as its core information is merely supported by, not composed of these images.
