Molly Hatchet, Pat Travers, Def Leppard, Scorpions
Uncle Ted was joined by Scorpions, Molly Hatchet, Pat Travers, and a group of fresh eyed teens from England that most had never heard of... Def Leppard!
The Georgia Jam held July 4 1980 where Ted Nugent, Scorpions, Pat Travers, Molly Hatchet, and Def Leppard performed was NOT held at Atlanta International Raceway in Hampton Ga.
It was in fact held at Road Atlanta in Braselton GA.
I was there with a dozen of my friends and recently even discussed this event with Derek St Holmes, a guitarist, songwriter, and singer for the Ted Nugent Band....who performed there that day.
The only reason that I put Atlanta International Raceway is because Road Atlanta wasn't listed. Feel free to correct it if you can...
So, was this the concert held in rural north Georgia? I was there... mostly! Don't quite remember def Leppard, but then it was hot and hazy.
Yes, it was hazy and very hot and seems like there was a brief thunderstorm with lightning while Nugent was on. I don't remember hearing everyone in the lineup but amazingly, somewhere I still have a couple photos from that show.
After the concert some guys with a jeep and a truck pushed down a barrier fence around the course; my friend followed onto the track and she and I drove around with some other cars, a mini-race. We’d taken the t-tops off, I remember; overall it was a grand day.
Georgia Jam 1980
I was there with my girlfriend. Got there about 10AM. The sun baked us all day long. Uncle Ted was lowered from a rope ladder from a helicopter that circled overhead. He jammed on his guitar while on the ladder. Without a doubt, on of the most memorable concerts I ever attended.
I've already got my ticket for the upcoming Midwest Rock-n-Roll Express tour with Ted, Styx and REO on May 17, 2012. It'll be the 4th time I will have seen Ted.
